I decided to sample soil from a house plant. This mold grew pretty fast in around 3 days. The colony is large but it is still growing, so I am expecting it to get larger. The top of the colony is filled with tiny, bumpy, black dots (sclerotia) sitting on top of a thin layer of white mycelia. The bottom of the colony consists of a thin layer of white-yellowish mycelia with light black dots barely peeking through. The growth pattern takes on an irregular type of shape. I believe that this mold is Sclerotium cepivorum. This is because of the similarities in macromorphology (Black sclerotia growing on top of white mycelia). The only difference between my sample and Sclerotium cepivorum is that my sample has a very thin layer of mycelia on the bottom, meaning that the sclerotia on the top of the plate are beginning to peek through.
