I sampled a pinecone from this very big pine tree. I chose to sample this pinecone because I was interested to see if there would be any fungi growing on a structure like this. The tree that I obtained the pinecone from is healthy since the needles of the tree are all green and the trunk of the tree looks undamaged. The pinecone is also undamaged and there are no blemishes on it that suggest that it is decomposing, since I would expect to see marks caused by bugs or micro-organisms on the sample. Since the pinecone looks healthy (not damaged) I would expect to see low levels of fungi present on the plates because I do not see anything on the pinecone that resembles fungi. I also do not think there there would be that many fungi growing on reproductive structures, like pinecones, however I am not sure.
