I collected the bark from an unknown tree that was cut down. I’m assuming this tree was probably cut down a few months ago, but I noticed that the inside of the tree was turning black, which is a sign decomposing/rotting. Since fungi are saprophytic, I thought there would a pretty good chance of finding fungi from this source. I did not take a sample of the black part (inner part) because I had no means of cutting a chunk out. However, I thought the bark might also have similar fungi present, so I pried off a piece of that instead. I would expect to find high levels of fungi present in my plates because the tree stump is decomposing, and fungi are most likely involved in that process. I would expect more fungi present from this source compared to a healthier tree.
